Two people from Reedsport were taken to a Portland-area hospital Thursday morning following a two-vehicle traffic crash in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Highway 217. The crash blocked the northbound lanes for about 45 minutes with traffic utilizing the right shoulder to move through the area until the involved vehicles were removed.
Around 6 a.m, a 1994 Nissan pickup driven by 31-year-old Silvino Rodriguez Valdez, from Salem, was northbound in the left lane on Interstate 5 near Highway 217 when the pickup had an unknown mechanical problem. Rodriguez Valdez tried moving across the northbound lanes to the right toward the exit, but as the pickup lost power it coasted to a stop in one of the traffic lanes and was struck from behind by a 2008 Chevrolet Impala four-door driven by 73-year-old Olaf Bryant from Reedsport.
Bryant and his wife, 79-year-old Phyllis Bryant, were transported by Metro West ambulance to Oregon Health & Science University with minor injuries.
Rodriguez Valdez wasn't hurt.
